A flurry of new assistive products and services for people experiencing uncorrectable sight loss recently became available. One of these is a new phone app called “Be My Eyes”. It matches up folks with good vision to those who do not. The concept is that low vision or blind individuals can call a volunteer and focus their smartphone camera on an object, monitor, prescription, document, set of instructions or a hand written note. The Be My Eyes volunteer will “read” or “see” the item, describing it to them. The volunteer can assist a low vision person by reading labels on household products to reading computer screens. The call for visual help goes to volunteers or company representatives, all for free! You can provide help to people with little remaining sight by downloading the app and registering to become a volunteer for Be My Eyes.
Thank you for your support of Eye-Link Wisconsin. We provide to people with uncorrectable sight loss, assistive/adaptive hardware and software packages that literally “reads” by putting a “voice” to cameras and equipment that can magnify type, objects, common mail and even food or can labels. Most of these specialized technologies are expensive.
Our grant application does not contain any language or clauses relating to income levels. We have learned from application discussions and equipment deliveries that approximately 85-95% of Eye-Link grant applicants are at or below the poverty level. Most seem to be surviving on only SSDI or Social Security Disability Insurance.
Eye-Link Wisconsin provides all assistive equipment at no charge to any low vision or blind approved applicants! Please reaffirm your support fortifying this critical effort with a contribution. Your gift to Eye-Link Wisconsin has the power to make a big difference in their lives.
Thank you for considering Eye-Link when you act to help others!
